History and Moorish
Architecture
Much of Spain's history and
architecture stems from its centuries of occupation by the
Moors. Nowhere is their influence more apparent than in
Andalucia.
The great cities of Seville, Granada, Malaga and
Cordoba are within 1½ - 4 hours drive of Montejaque and
contain the finest examples of Moorish art and design and
reminders of that period, as well as having some great
Renaissance and Baroque buildings from the Re-conquest period.
Close to Montejaque, just a 20 minutes drive, Ronda is a
fascinating historic town which features many buildings from
different times in its chequered past. Roman remains near the
town, and further afield at Italica, tells of earlier
settlers, while evidence of prehistoric occupation can be
found in the drawings in nearby Cuevas de la Pileta.
