Montejaque Village

Montejaque is one of the Moorish 'pueblos blancos' of Andalucia - narrow streets of whitewashed houses and cottages. The locals are friendly and helpful, but few speak any English. The approach to the village and the main square are, more or less, on the same level with the village spreading up and down. Some of the streets are quite steep with no vehicular access.

Life in a mountain village, while very relaxed, is not always quiet. The usual rural sounds of animals and birds can be added to by loudspeaker announcements, fireworks at fiestas, events at the school and of course extrovert Spanish voices. El Corchito, at the edge of the village, has more of the rural and less of the village sounds but barking dogs and early rising cockerels can disturb some who are not used to country life.
Most necessities can be bought in the village - many shops have no signs outside - just look through open doorways to find them! There are two bank branches, both with ATMs; a medical centre and a chemist. There is wide choice of places to eat including two good resturants and a small hotel.
Enjoy superb mountain views as you explore the attractive old village or join the villagers in one of the small Spanish bars for tapas and a vino or two.

For those who prefer not to drive, there is a very limited bus service to Ronda, and mainline trains from neighbouring Benaojan connect with lines to beautiful and historic cities.
