Ronda

Ronda, just 20 minutes drive from Montejaque, is an historic and fascinating town, the main shopping centre for about 30 villages in the area. Full of character, with interesting buildings, a range of cultural events through the year, good shops and a Sunday market. It is worth spending a bit of time to explore this old town.

In the Cuidad, the old Moorish city of winding narrow streets, there are numerous places of interest - palaces and town houses with impressive facades, several of which are open to the public, fine churches, Arab baths, and museums. The Cuidad is a reminder of the impact that the Moorish occupation has had on this area of Spain.

It is separated from the newer part of the town by the dramatic Tajo gorge, (100 metres deep) and is linked by an eighteenth century bridge, the scene of many gory chapters in Ronda's chequered history. The Mercadillo side holds what is claimed to be Spain's oldest bullring, worth a visit for its architecture and museum. Nearby is the attractive Almeda Park with spectacular views across the gorge and out across the valley to the mountains in the west. Ronda has banks, a cinema/theatre, a wide range of shops; a Parador set on the gorge edge and restaurants offering a wide choice of menu.
